Kulick 5th in US Open – Johnson Breaks Tie with 4th Title

Kelly Kulick was attempting to earn her fourth US Open title but fell short in the opening match losing to Jazleen Tan from Singapore 195-190. Kulick had an opportunity to win the match by doubling in the tenth making the first one with a gutsy ball change but left the 2-4-5 on the second attempt. This was Kulicks 11th US Open telecast in her career.

In the next match, Tan defeated Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, 172-165. In the semi final match, defending champion Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York defeated Tan 199-177.

In the final match Johnson faced top seed Shannon O’Keefe from of O’Fallon, Illinois. O’Keefe had an opportunity to shutout Johnson with two strikes and seven pins in her final frame. After she left a washout and failed to convert, Johnson covered a 4 pin and got seven on her fill ball to escape with the win making her the first bowler to successfully defeat her title since hall of famer Dorothy Fothergill accomplished the feat in 1969. She also joins Kulick as the only player to win the US Open and USBC Queens winner in the same year.

Johnson’s win also breaks the tie with Kulick for second place on the event’s all-time win list behind fellow USBC Hall of Famer Marion Ladewig, who won eight times.
